Singapore Pioneering in the Smart Traffic Light Systems

Singapore has been a pioneer in the implementation of smart traffic light systems. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been working on developing and deploying smart traffic light systems since the early 2000s.

Singapore’s smart traffic light systems are a model for other cities around the world. They show how smart technology can be used to improve the efficiency and sustainability of transportation systems.

Malaysia should start implementing such a system. The amount of money, time, fuel and car time spent in traffic jams across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and some other cities is unthinkable.

In 2004, the LTA launched the Green Link Determining (GLIDE) system, which is a centralized traffic signal control system that uses sensors to collect data on traffic conditions and adjust the timing of traffic lights accordingly. GLIDE has been credited with reducing traffic congestion by up to 20% in some areas of Singapore.

In 2018, the LTA launched the Cooperative and Unified Smart Traffic System (CRUISE), which is a more advanced smart traffic light system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize traffic flow.

A Smart Traffic Light System

CRUISE is able to collect data from a variety of sources, including traffic sensors, GPS data, and weather data. It uses this data to calculate the optimal timing for traffic lights and to adjust the timing in real time to account for changes in traffic conditions.

The LTA plans to deploy CRUISE to all major junctions in Singapore by 2025. The agency believes that CRUISE will help to reduce traffic congestion by up to 30%.

Here are some of the benefits of Singapore’s smart traffic light systems:

  • They have reduced traffic congestion by up to 20% in some areas.
  • They have improved traffic flow and made it easier for people to get around.
  • They have reduced emissions and improved air quality.
  • They have made it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • They have made it more efficient for public transportation.
