The Toyota Mobility Foundation and the Bali Provincial Government Launch Its SMART Program
The Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) is partnering with the Bali Provincial Government to launch the Sustainable Mobility Advancing Real Transformation (SMART) @Ubud Program. Scheduled from September 2023 to February 2024, this 6-month trial aims to promote sustainable mobility through data-driven and electrified transport solutions. The program, co-organized by Deloitte Future of Mobility Solution Centre, with support from the Transport Department of the Bali Government and Toyota Indonesia, seeks to enhance local transportation.
Investment for Sustainable Solutions
TMF will invest $1.7 million (IDR 26 billion) to conduct a trial of two mobility solutions in Ubud, Bali. The first involves a fleet of on-demand xEV shuttles, providing convenient transportation within Central Ubud. The second solution includes installing digital display monitors at high-traffic bus stops, offering real-time bus schedules for commuters. These solutions are aligned with Bali’s 2026 electric mobility plan and aim to address air pollution, traffic congestion, and encourage electrified public transportation.
Empowering Local Communities
Apart from the solutions, TMF will engage in capacity-building initiatives to develop viable business models tailored to the local community. The goal is to reduce carbon emissions and improve mobility in Ubud, with the intention to scale the model across Bali and beyond. This project aligns with Toyota’s commitment to electrification and sustainability.
Smart Solutions for Better Mobility
The trial involves the SMART Shuttle @Ubud service, using a booking app developed by SWAT Mobility. This on-demand shuttle service features both battery electric and hybrid vehicles. Additionally, dynamic bus schedule displays will be implemented to visualize estimated bus arrival times, enhancing the convenience and efficiency of public transportation. The collaboration of various stakeholders aims to create a blueprint for sustainable business models that can continue to benefit the community after the trial period.

As part of Toyota’s broader electrification goals, the SMART @Ubud Program sets the stage for a more environmentally friendly and efficient transportation landscape in Bali.
