Braskem Partners Thailand’s SCG Chemicals to Double Bio-Based Plastic Production
Braskem, the leading global biopolymer producer, and SCG Chemicals or SCGC, a leading petrochemical company in Thailand and Southeast Asia, have signed a joint venture (JV) agreement to produce bio-ethylene from bio-ethanol dehydration and to commercialize Braskem’s I’m green bio-based Polyethylene, using the EtE EverGreen technology. The technology results from the partnership agreement between Lummus Technology LLC and Braskem B.V. to develop and license this technology.
Expansion of Sustainable Plastic Production in Thailand
Bringing a groundbreaking advancement to the global market, the bio-ethylene plant in Thailand marks a pivotal milestone as the first of its kind beyond Brazil. This pioneering facility amplifies the production capacity of I’m green bio-based Polyethylene, a revolutionary plastic derived from ethically sourced ethanol. The plant’s strategic location is poised to effectively address the surging worldwide demand for eco-conscious biopolymers, notably across Asia and Europe.
Committed to sustainability, this bio-based Polyethylene harnesses renewable agricultural resources, diverging from conventional fossil fuels like naphtha. By substantially curbing carbon dioxide emissions, this innovation significantly bolsters environmental well-being. I’m green bio-based Polyethylene serves diverse applications ranging from consumables and household goods to playthings and packaging, all while remaining amenable to mechanical or advanced recycling, akin to standard Polyethylene.
The combination of Braskem’s bio-based plastics know-how with SCGCs’ position in the Asian market and expertise in PE production provides a solid business basis for the joint venture. Braskem will contribute with its proven EtE EverGreen technology, operational experience in ethanol dehydration process and the I´m green brand strength in key global markets. SCGC will provide expertise in high quality Polyethylene grades for different applications, operational excellence in Polyethylene manufacturing and market reach in Southeast Asia.

The project will be located in Map Ta Phut, Rayong, Thailand.
