UIA2024KL Forum to Spotlight Global Urban Sustainability

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 February 2024 – In a significant nod to its burgeoning status as a global hub for sustainable urban development, Kuala Lumpur has been chosen to host the prestigious UIA 2024 International Forum (UIA2024KL) from 15th to 19th of November 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

This landmark event, expected to draw more than 3,000 delegates, underscores the city’s commitment to fostering diverse, inclusive, and sustainable urban environments. Organised jointly by the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia [PAM] and Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur [DBKL], the UIA2024KL is set to be a transformative gathering. It will bring together architects, urban planners, policymakers, and enthusiasts from around the globe to engage in critical discussions under the theme “DIVERSECITY for Humanity and Sustainable Growth”.

This theme reflects the complex challenges modern cities face, emphasising the need for strategies that prioritise human well-being alongside environmental stewardship.

Kamarulzaman Bin Mat Salleh, Datuk Bandar Kuala Lumpur, at Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), after the soft launch of the UIA 2024 International Forum Kuala Lumpur.

The UIA2024KL is anticipated to generate a significant economic impact, with an estimated RM43.4 million in benefits and up to RM18.5 million in visitor expenditures, bolstering the Malaysian economy.

At the Forum’s soft launch at the Mayor’s Court at No. 11 Jalan Tangsi, Pn. Hanum Ain binti Zainal, Director of DBKL Project Implementation and Building Maintenance Department, who delivered the launch speech on behalf of Datuk Bandar Kuala Lumpur, Yang Berbahagia Datuk Sr Haji Kamarulzaman bin Mat Salleh, articulates the city’s vision, “Kuala Lumpur is steadfast in its journey to emerge as a global frontrunner in crafting resilient, inclusive, and habitable urban landscapes. The UIA 2024 International Forum Kuala Lumpur offers a golden opportunity for us to exchange insights, absorb global best practices, and cultivate partnerships
that will propel us towards achieving our collective aspirations.”

Ar. Abu Zarim Abu Bakar, President of Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia, also highlighted the significance of Malaysia’s role as the host nation: “Hosting the UIA2024KL in Malaysia is significant for sharing our cultural diversity experience and it is a powerful way to promote dialogue, understanding, and appreciation for the diverse cultural contexts in which architecture operates. It has the potential to inspire positive change, foster collaboration, and contribute to the advancement of architecture as a socially responsible and culturally
responsive profession”.
