ECRL completed end-2026, operational Jan 2027

The Transport Ministry assures the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) will be ready by December 2026, operational by January 2027, cutting travel time between Kota Bahru and Kuala Lumpur to four hours.

As of March, construction progress stands at 64%, spanning Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Selangor. Over 1,900 work sites, with 650 active, are scattered along the 665km route.

ECRL Completion

Key achievements include tunnel excavation reaching 8km depth, bridge installation progress, and early completion of 92km track laying. The use of innovative track-laying machinery expedites construction, with electrification system installation set to commence in May.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke says 64 percent of the construction of the line has so far been achieved as of March with the line traversing four states: Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor.

“The ECRL project has entered a new construction phase since 2023 with infrastructure works to include the installation of flyover beams, track installation, and the construction of stations and railway depots,” he says.
