New train service starts linking Selangor to Kunming, China
A new freight train service between Selangor, Malaysia, and Kunming, China, will launch on August 17. This service, part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aims to boost trade in vegetables and halal products.
The route will pass through Laos and Thailand, and reduce transit time from over 20 days by sea to about 10 days. The trial service will begin soon, with full operations expected by September.
China Railway will be the operator for this route, and Malaysian railway company KTM should take this opportunity to establish its cooperation with China Railway.

The initiative could lead to further rail collaborations and potentially high-speed passenger rail projects. China Railway and Malaysia’s KTM are expected to cooperate on this new cargo route.
The journey will take about 10 days, Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi told the Singapore Straits Times.
“This initiative not only strengthens the existing cooperation in the rail transport sector but also opens the door to future collaborations, potentially even in the development of high-speed rail projects between China and Malaysia for passengers,” he reportedly said.
