Malaysia Accelerates AI and Cybersecurity for Transformational Economic Growth
Malaysia is intensifying its focus on artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and cybersecurity to bolster economic growth, according to Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. At the launch of Nextbigtech Asia 2024, he emphasized the importance of AI and data governance in transforming the nation’s economy and communities.
Gobind highlighted that “Quantum science and technology is another area that we need to look at,” noting the potential for Malaysia to lead in technological advancements and the substantial global funding available for research in this field.

Cybersecurity is also a key priority, with recent legislative updates to enhance data protection, including revisions to the Personal Data Protection Act and a new Cybersecurity Act introduced in August. The minister assured that “we will certainly do what is necessary to ensure that your data is protected at all times.”
He pointed out that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which constitute 97% of businesses in Malaysia, are crucial to the economy. The Digital Ministry aims to support these businesses through mentorship, training, and funding via the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation.
Gobind noted significant digital investments in Malaysia, totaling US$185.3 billion from 2021 to June 2024, driven by major tech companies like NVIDIA, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Looking ahead, he expressed optimism about Malaysia’s role in regional digital cooperation, particularly as the country prepares to chair ASEAN in 2025.
He stated, “In the next two or three years, we will see a change,” urging all stakeholders to adapt and innovate rapidly to keep pace with the digital transformation.
