Magic Ports Powered by Huawei 5G: Transforming Global Trade through Technology

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, China’s largest port by container throughput for nine consecutive years, is leading a technological revolution by embracing Huawei’s 5G solutions. With connections to over 600 ports across 100 countries, Ningbo-Zhoushan has become a critical player in global trade. Now, powered by 5G, the port is transforming into a “magic port,” utilizing automation, real-time data monitoring, and remote operations to streamline its processes.

In April 2019, the port successfully trialed 5G-based operations, enabling remote-controlled gantry cranes and high-definition video backhaul systems. This marked the first implementation of 5G in a live port setting in China, paving the way for a new era of smart port development.

Huawei 5G

Huawei, alongside China Mobile and local government bodies, is pioneering the use of 5G technology in other major Chinese ports, including Guangzhou and Tianjin, as part of a larger push to digitize port operations across the country. By leveraging the low-latency, high-bandwidth capabilities of 5G, these ports are becoming hubs of efficiency, using autonomous driving technology, container tracking, and intelligent coordination of resources.

“5G is the key to port digitization,” said Li Kewu, Huawei’s chief expert of port digitization. “It provides the foundation for real-time information sharing, automation, and the integration of technologies like AI and the Internet of Things.”

Transforming Global Trade

Ports play a critical role in city development, serving as gateways for international trade and economic growth. Huawei’s 5G solutions will not only revolutionize port operations but also help cities better position themselves in the global economy through smart infrastructure.

As ports around the world look to modernize, Huawei’s 5G-powered solutions are setting the benchmark for future-proofing critical trade hubs, laying the foundation for more efficient, connected, and intelligent operations. The collaboration between Huawei and China’s major ports signals the dawn of a new era in global logistics.
