Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has been subpoenaed to testify as a plaintiff’s witness in a RM30 million civil lawsuit filed by 12 individuals against businessman Vinod Sekhar and his wife, Winny Yeap Liew Heoh. Court documents show the subpoena was applied for by law firm Messrs Goh Wong Pereira, with proceedings scheduled at the Kuala Lumpur High Court. Lawyer Colin Pereira confirmed the subpoena was served on the Prime Minister via email, courier and hand delivery to the Prime Minister’s Office. However, hearings initially fixed for January have been vacated and will resume in April and June.
The lawsuit, filed in 2023, alleges misrepresentation, fraud and breach of contract. Ten of the plaintiffs are Vinod’s investors, while two are former employees. The plaintiffs claim Vinod induced them to invest without disclosing his alleged bankruptcy status, and suggested that an individual named “Anwar” would resolve the issue, leading them to believe he was referring to the Prime Minister.
