BlaBlaCar enters Malaysia with its carpooling platform, offering motorists a cost-sharing option amid rising fuel costs while complementing public transport infrastructure.
BlaBlaCar Enters Malaysian Market
BlaBlaCar, the world’s leading carpooling platform, has launched in Malaysia, marking its first expansion into Southeast Asia and bringing its global footprint to 41 countries.
The platform connects drivers with empty seats on planned intercity journeys to passengers traveling along the same routes, allowing both parties to share fuel and toll expenses.
The launch comes as rising fuel prices increase pressure on Malaysian households. While eligible Malaysians continue to access subsidised RON95 at RM1.99 per litre under BUDI95, unsubsidised prices reached RM3.62 per litre in late July, up nearly 36% since early March.
BlaBlaCar said its average trip carries 2.1 passengers, enabling drivers to offset more than half of their fuel and toll costs through cost-sharing. Its pricing tool calculates passenger contributions based on local fuel rates and route distance, with fees capped at cost recovery rather than profit.
The company said Malaysia’s high reliance on private vehicles and strong domestic travel activity create opportunities for carpooling. In 2025, Malaysia recorded 290.1 million domestic visitor trips, with nearly 260 million made by private vehicle.
Founded in France in 2006, BlaBlaCar now serves 30 million annual active members and uses verified profiles, ratings, reviews and content moderation to support community trust.
