Cambodia Emerges as Cybercrime Hub Amid Economic Woes
Prime Minister Hun Manet’s government in Cambodia is under increasing domestic pressure due to a deteriorating economy, growing inequality, and a rise in illicit activities, particularly cybercrime and online scams. International intelligence and UNODC reports indicate that profits from these illegal operations are linked to individuals close to Cambodia’s political elite. The UNODC has mapped global scam centers, identifying Cambodia, not Myanmar, as the leading regional hub for cyber fraud, with Sihanoukville highlighted as a major scam center along the Thai-Cambodian border.
