WASHINGTON, July 26 — Democrats have taken a narrow lead over Republicans ahead of the November 2026 US midterm elections, according to a new Washington Post-Ipsos poll, buoyed by significantly stronger voter enthusiasm despite the party’s defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
The survey, conducted from July 8 to 13, found Democrats leading Republicans by 48% to 45% in voter preference for Congress. The advantage widens among voters who said they are “absolutely certain” to cast their ballots, with Democrats enjoying an eight-point lead of 53% to 45%.

The findings suggest Democratic supporters are more motivated to vote than Republicans, with Democrats holding a 10-point advantage in voter certainty, compared with just a two-point edge before the 2018 midterm elections.
The poll comes as President Donald Trump continues to face weak public approval. His overall job approval rating stands at 37%, matching results from a separate Economist/YouGov survey conducted during the same period.
Political observers note that the Republican Party faces a challenging electoral environment despite holding narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson commands only a two-seat majority in the House of Representatives, leaving little room for defections as Republicans seek to advance Trump’s legislative agenda. Republicans also retain a 53-47 majority in the Senate.
However, Democrats’ hopes of reclaiming control of Congress remain uncertain due to partisan redistricting and the highly competitive political landscape. The outcome of November’s elections will determine whether Republicans can maintain their congressional majority or whether Democrats can capitalise on growing voter enthusiasm to regain power.
