Penang Launches New Direct Guangzhou Flight Boosting China Connectivity
Penang has welcomed a new direct flight from Guangzhou, China, operated by Spring Airlines, coinciding with the early phase of Visit Malaysia 2026. The inaugural Guangzhou–Penang service has landed, marking a key step in enhancing Penang’s appeal to Chinese travellers and improving aviation links.
“The inaugural Guangzhou–Penang flight will be operated by Spring Airlines and has officially touched down in Penang,” said state tourism committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.
He described the route as a milestone that fosters closer ties, tourism collaboration, people-to-people exchanges, and industrial cooperation between the two cities. The launch supports Penang’s ongoing expansion of China-bound connectivity amid preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026.
Penang’s international direct flights increased to 335 per week following the addition of Spring Airlines’ daily Shanghai–Penang service and the thrice-weekly Guangzhou route—a 25.5% rise from 267 weekly flights in August 2023. Guangzhou, with a 2024 population of 18.978 million and GDP of RMB3.10325 trillion, ranks among China’s top economic hubs, while Guangdong Province leads nationally.
