RON95 petrol subsidy reforms may start soon, saving RM4 billion annually, amid rising fiscal pressures and increased enforcement against misappropriation and smuggling
PUTRAJAYA – The government will implement targeted RON95 petrol subsidies by the end of 2025, with MyKad as the main verification tool. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the move will ensure only eligible Malaysians benefit, reducing the fiscal burden of blanket subsidies. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously confirmed eligibility would be determined not only by income, but also by wealth indicators such as luxury property and vehicle ownership. The mechanism, similar to existing electricity and diesel subsidy schemes, will mirror Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA), where aid distribution is directly linked to MyKad authentication.
