Malaysia’s benchmark FBM KLCI slipped 4.02 points, or 0.25%, to close at 1,623.70 on Thursday from Wednesday’s 1,627.72, as a global technology sell-off spilled over into Bursa Malaysia and dragged broader market sentiment sharply lower.
The modest decline in the headline index masked far weaker conditions underneath. Market breadth was decisively negative, with losers trouncing gainers 852 to 294, as investors tracked Wall Street’s earlier losses and questioned whether the heavy capital spending on artificial intelligence can be sustained.
Tech rout leads the laggards
Technology was the worst-performing sector, tumbling 3.53%, followed by Industrial Products, down 2.04%, and Healthcare, which fell 1.74%. Finance was the lone sector in positive territory, inching up 0.01%.
Outlook: range-bound with a defensive tilt
Analysts said sentiment could recover somewhat on Friday after Wall Street’s overnight rebound, though the continuing rotation out of US AI-related technology stocks may keep global risk appetite in check.
Thursday’s lopsided breadth also signals that underlying appetite for risk remains fragile, despite the relative resilience of the benchmark. Large-cap defensive names are expected to support the KLCI, while broader-market participation may stay subdued heading into the weekend. The index is seen trading range-bound, with investors likely to favour selective domestic and defensive exposures.
Sectors to watch
With money rotating away from technology, sectors with defensive characteristics and low sensitivity to tech could prove resilient. Plantation stands to benefit as tighter oil fundamentals into 2027 continue to underpin crude palm oil prices, while Utilities offer a defensive earnings profile. Large-cap Finance names may also draw support as resilient economic fundamentals continue to underpin the KLCI.
Technical view: bias stays bearish
On the charts, the 1,600 level serves as immediate support. The index remains below most key moving averages, and the bearish Shooting Star candlestick formed on 14 October reinforces a weak overall trend.
A decisive break below 1,600 could send the KLCI towards 1,580, while any rebound is likely to meet selling pressure. The index needs to reclaim the 1,640 to 1,650 range to improve its technical picture, with a break above 1,650 signalling a stronger bullish reversal. Until then, the bias remains bearish.
