KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — Malaysia’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.0% in July, signalling broadly stable labour market conditions amid firm domestic demand. However, the number of unemployed rose for the fifth straight month to 520,300, suggesting underlying weaknesses that warrant close monitoring.
Employment growth edged up +0.1% month-on-month, supported by hiring in services such as arts, entertainment, accommodation, food and beverage, and financial activities. Gains were also recorded in manufacturing, construction, agriculture and mining. By status, employers (+0.3%), employees (+0.1%) and self-employed (+0.3%) all increased, while the labour force expanded to 17.37 million with participation steady at 70.9%.

Looking ahead, policy support including subsidies and cash aid should sustain household consumption, while investment pipelines and the extended Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign are expected to underpin tourism-related hiring. Manufacturing prospects remain positive, with the E&E segment benefiting from the global AI upcycle. August’s PMI showed marginal hiring alongside new orders, reflecting resilience.
SOCSO data revealed job losses eased to 7,526 in August, the first improvement in four months, while placements stayed solid at 26,468. Still, cost pressures and global uncertainties may temper hiring momentum. Analysts maintain the unemployment forecast at 3.0% in 2026, supporting GDP growth of +5.0%.
