Leader Energy Group Bhd (LEG), through its subsidiary Leader Solar Energy II Sdn Bhd (LSE), and Plus Xnergy Services Sdn Bhd (PXS), will deploy Malaysia’s first sodium-sulfur (NaS) battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 1.45MWh at LSE’s solar farm in Kedah. Datuk Sean H’ng, executive deputy chairman and co-group CEO of LEG, expressed pride in leading Malaysia’s renewable energy sector, stating, “This innovative project will improve the efficiency and reliability of our solar energy operations at LSE while also demonstrating the broader potential of NaS BESS for grid firming and energy stability.”
The contract exchange ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Sri Fadillah Yusof during the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (iGEM) 2024. The NaS technology offers greater energy density, allowing for complete discharge without degradation and providing a longer lifespan with low maintenance. The project marks Malaysia’s first utility-scale BESS connected to an operational large-scale solar (LSS) farm. PXS group CEO Ko Chuan Zhen remarked, “We are pleased with the foresight of LEG in piloting this technology, which has tremendous benefits for our renewable energy industry.”
The NaS BESS is projected to enable an annual avoidance of 126.5 tCO2e, contributing significantly to national sustainability targets and supporting Malaysia’s ambitions to become a regional data and cloud hub. Installation is set to begin in mid-October 2024, with completion by year-end. The BESS will enhance energy stability, reduce carbon emissions, and create job opportunities in the renewable energy sector, contributing to economic growth.
