Malaysia is aiming at elimination of tariffs imposed by the US

KOTA BHARU: Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani says Malaysia is in discussions with the US with the aim to reduce or eliminate tariffs, as reported on April 25, with Trade Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz engaging US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Economist Prof Dr Geoffrey Williams noted the 90-day tariff suspension offers Malaysia a chance to secure better trade terms with the US, thus enhancing its global competitiveness. Malaysia is negotiating with the US on the reciprocal tariffs, including a 10% general tariff and a 24% tariff on Malaysia, which is paused for 90 days. Johari says US President Donald Trump’s tariffs impact all countries, with varying rates like Vietnam’s 56%.
