Pekema Plans Local Assembly of Dongfeng EVs in Malaysia
PETALING JAYA, July 19, 2026 – The Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association of Malaysia (Pekema) is preparing to assemble Dongfeng electric vehicles (EVs) locally under a completely knocked down (CKD) arrangement beginning next year.
Pekema president Datuk Mohamed Nazari Noordin said the initiative supports the National Automotive Policy and the government’s push for technology transfer and CKD production. Discussions are ongoing with Dongfeng’s headquarters in China, while Pekema is also identifying suitable local assembly partners.
“All Dongfeng models priced below RM200,000 will be considered for CKD assembly in Malaysia,” Nazari explained. Potential sites in Melaka and Johor Bahru have been surveyed, though final decisions depend on agreements with Dongfeng.
Nazari added the move would strengthen Malaysia’s EV ecosystem, create jobs, and enhance local industry capabilities. He spoke during the 12th Pekema President’s Cup Golf Championship in Putrajaya, which saw participation rise to 500 players compared to 400 last year.
The tournament offered prizes worth RM500,000, including a Dongfeng Vigo MPV for a hole‑in‑one challenge, alongside cash rewards and other gifts.
