Malaysia’s technology sector could emerge as an indirect beneficiary of a proposed US restriction on imports of new-model optical transceiver modules manufactured in China.

According to recent reports, the US Federal Communications Commission is drafting measures to expand its covered list, aiming to reduce dependence on Chinese optical suppliers.

While the move is intended to strengthen supply chain security, industry observers believe the immediate impact may weigh more heavily on US hyperscale data centre operators, given China’s dominant position in optical transceiver manufacturing and the limited availability of alternative suppliers.

The proposed policy could accelerate supply chain diversification, prompting manufacturers and customers to expand production outside China. Malaysia is well positioned to capture part of this shift, supported by its established semiconductor ecosystem and growing presence in optical component manufacturing.

Companies with existing exposure to optical technologies could benefit from stronger demand and potential investment inflows if the proposal is implemented.
