Ringgit Opens Higher Against US Dollar

Ringgit opens higher at 4.0820/0885 against US dollar, supported by demand despite firm US data and resilient greenback.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2, 2026, The ringgit opened stronger against the US dollar and most major currencies on Friday, supported by firm demand for the local unit despite resilient US economic data that kept the greenback elevated.

At 8 am, the ringgit rose to 4.0820/0885 against the US dollar compared with Thursday’s close of 4.0830/4.0875. Market analysts noted that the US Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Manufacturing PMI stood at 54.5 points in September, only marginally lower than the previous month’s 54.6, while the New Orders sub-index accelerated to 55.3 points from 53.7, signaling continued strength in business activity. Initial jobless claims also fell further to 197,000, with the four-week moving average declining to 200,000, underscoring the resilience of the US labor market.

Against major currencies, the ringgit appreciated against the euro to 4.5914/5987 from 4.6015/6066 and strengthened against the British pound to 5.3870/3956 from 5.3896/3955. However, it eased against the Japanese yen to 2.5844/5886 from 2.5781/5811.

In ASEAN trade, the ringgit slipped against the Singapore dollar to 3.1883/1936 from 3.1856/1894 and edged down against the Thai baht to 12.1207/1515 from 12.1111/1294. It remained unchanged against the Philippine peso at 6.50/6.51 and the Indonesian rupiah at 227.2/227.6.

The local note’s resilience reflects steady demand amid global uncertainties, with investors closely monitoring US economic indicators and regional currency movements for further direction.
