Southeast Asia Braces for “Super El Niño” Threat

BANGKOK, Aug 12, 2026 – Farmers, governments, and communities across Southeast Asia are bracing for what experts warn could be one of the most severe El Niño events ever recorded, with extreme heat, drought, and erratic rainfall expected to hit the region over the next year.

Thai farmer Surachai Parunram, who has long battled unpredictable weather, fears the looming “Super El Niño” will devastate livelihoods. “We don’t know what to produce because every farmer has debt, and we don’t know where our income will come from when there’s no water,” he said.

Scientists caution that this El Niño is unfolding on a planet already warmed by 1.4–1.5°C, amplifying risks. The World Meteorological Organization forecasts sea-surface temperatures in the Pacific to surge 2°C above normal, with impacts peaking between November and February. Thailand faces severe drought, delayed rains, and possible “rain bombs,” while Indonesia and Malaysia risk haze and crop losses. The Philippines could see strained water supplies and hydropower shortages, while Singapore braces for extreme heat and higher food import costs.

Economists warn food prices may spike, with rice and palm oil production disrupted. Bloomberg Economics estimates inflation could rise by two percentage points in Indonesia and the Philippines. Coral bleaching and tourism losses are also anticipated.

Governments are scrambling to prepare: Indonesia has distributed water pumps and drought-resistant seeds, the Philippines is expanding irrigation, and Thailand has ordered agencies to secure water and emergency reserves. Yet experts say ground-level readiness remains weak, with farmers lacking clear guidance.

Humanitarian groups warn the crisis will deepen food insecurity, especially for women and girls. CARE estimates 172 million people in vulnerable countries are already at risk. The UN World Food Programme projects up to 49 million more could face acute hunger by next year.
