Malaysia Unveils 7 Strategic Focus Areas for Impactful COP29 in Baku

As Malaysia prepares for COP29 in Baku from 11 to 22 November, the nation’s 250-strong delegation, led by Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, is set to advocate for a transformative climate agenda. With its “Shift for Sustainability – Climate Action Now!” Pavilion, Malaysia aims to integrate the COP29 theme, “Enhance Ambition, Enable Action,” into its strategy.

The Malaysia Pavilion’s seven key areas outline a robust approach toward achieving net-zero emissions, promoting green investment, and advancing regional leadership as the incoming ASEAN Chair.

Malaysia’s COP29 Key Priorities

  1. Finance & Economy: Malaysia will enhance sustainable finance through climate financing and carbon markets to attract investment across ASEAN.
  2. Trade & Industry: Sustainable trade practices, circular economy strategies, and unified carbon trading frameworks will be promoted to strengthen climate governance.
  3. Natural Resources: Emphasis will be placed on community-driven natural resource management, leveraging Malaysia’s biodiversity.
  4. Energy: The National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) will spotlight renewable energy projects, including hybrid solar initiatives, carbon capture, and regional grid interconnectivity.
  5. Tech & Innovation: Combining advanced technology with indigenous knowledge, Malaysia seeks to enhance resilience and position itself as a leader in climate tech.
  6. Sustainable Development: Adaptive urban planning will aim to foster climate-resilient communities and equitable growth.
  7. Youth & Adaptation: Through youth empowerment, Malaysia seeks to tackle food security, flood risks, and sea-level rise, advocating for inclusive climate frameworks.

Malaysia’s green economy initiatives, supported by the Green Technology Financial Scheme (GTFS), have drawn over RM10 billion in investment and created 5,579 green jobs since 2010. At COP29, Malaysia will reinforce its commitment to green growth and sustainable development as outlined in Budget 2025, with plans for a 2026 carbon tax.
