RON95 petrol subsidy reforms may start soon, saving RM4 billion annually, amid rising fiscal pressures and increased enforcement against misappropriation and smuggling
PUTRAJAYA — The government’s 300-litre petrol subsidy quota under the Budi Madani RON95 (Budi95) programme is more than sufficient for normal use, as 95 per cent of Malaysians consume less than 180 litres of fuel monthly, said Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican.
He said data showed that the average Malaysian uses about 80 litres a month, while less than 0.7 per cent consume above 300 litres. Based on early October data, under 0.1 per cent of eligible users had fully used their quota.
Johan added that increasing the limit could risk misuse and smuggling, citing cases of individuals with motorcycle licences using over 300 litres in two weeks.
Implemented on Sept 27, Budi95 offers RON95 at RM1.99 per litre to eligible Malaysians aged 16 and above. The targeted subsidy is expected to save RM2.5 billion annually, redirected towards development and welfare programmes.
