Only $500 million in tariffs collected in USA since April 5

The Business Insider reports that President Donald Trump has claimed the U.S. is collecting $2 billion daily in tariff revenue, but official data contradicts this, showing significantly lower figures.

The Treasury Department’s daily statements indicate total deposits under “Customs & Certain Excise Taxes” at around $305 million, roughly 15% of Trump’s claim. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data further shows only $500 million collected in “reciprocal tariffs” since April 5, 2025.

Trump’s tariffs, including a 10% levy on all countries and higher rates (up to 54% on China), were imposed to address trade imbalances and boost U.S. manufacturing.

Lower tariffs revenue collection

However, the article highlights that these tariffs have led to economic disruptions, including stock market turmoil, higher consumer prices, and retaliatory tariffs from countries like China, Canada, and the EU.

Critics argue the tariffs may not achieve their intended economic goals and could burden U.S. consumers, with estimates suggesting an average tax increase of $1,243 per household in 2025.

The discrepancy between Trump’s claims and actual revenue underscores ongoing debates about the efficacy and impact of his trade policies.
