Australia Will Buy So Much US Beef Says Trump

The United States is celebrating Australia’s decision to relax import restrictions on US beef, a move President Donald Trump hailed as “undeniable and irrefutable proof” that US beef is the safest and best in the world. Trump warned other countries that refuse US beef that they are “on notice.”

Australia announced it would loosen biosecurity rules, now allowing beef from cattle born in Canada or Mexico but slaughtered in the US, citing improved US cattle traceability and control systems. Previously, Australia had restricted US beef imports since 2003 over mad cow disease concerns, only permitting meat from animals exclusively born, raised, and slaughtered in the US since 2019 – a requirement few US suppliers could meet.

Despite Trump’s confidence, analysts expect little increase in US beef exports to Australia because Australia is itself a major beef producer with much lower prices. Last year, Australia exported nearly 400,000 metric tons of beef to the US but imported only 269 tons of US beef.
