Toyota Motor Corporation, Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., ENEOS Corporation, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. have initiated a joint study aimed at introducing and promoting carbon-neutral fuels in Japan by around 2030.
These fuels, which include synthetic fuels made from hydrogen and CO2, and biofuels derived from plants, are designed to limit CO2 emissions throughout their life cycle.
The companies will focus on developing scenarios and roadmaps for integrating these fuels into Japan’s automobile market and ensuring energy security. This collaborative effort aligns with each company’s long-term vision for achieving a carbon-neutral society.

Carbon-neutral fuels are fuels that limit CO2 emissions across the entire product life cycle. It is a collective term that includes synthetic fuels (e-fuel) made using hydrogen and CO2, and biofuels made from raw materials such as plants that absorb CO2 via photosynthesis.
Liquid carbon-neutral fuels in particular are advantageous in terms of energy storage and transportation and are suitable as energy sources that can be transported.
