China Warns Cambodia: Disappearances of Chinese Nationals Threaten Bilateral Ties
China’s embassy in Cambodia has expressed serious concern over the recent disappearances of Chinese nationals linked to cyberfraud compounds, describing the issue as a “serious obstacle” to the strong alliance between the two countries.
Ambassador Wang Wenbin met with top Cambodian ministers, urging Phnom Penh to intensify its crackdown on the illicit online scam industry, which employs at least 100,000 people and generates tens of billions in annual global losses. The scams often involve trafficked workers forced under threat of violence.
China recently deported a key suspect, Chen Zhi, to face trial at home. The UN estimates scam losses reached US$37 billion in East and Southeast Asia in 2023, while Amnesty International accuses Cambodia of ignoring rights abuses by these gangs. Photo: Christianity Today
