Denmark Sets Europe’s Highest Retirement Age at 70 by 2040, Sparking Debate Over Work and Dignity

Denmark’s parliament passed a law raising the retirement age to 70 by 2040, making it the highest in Europe. The retirement age, currently 67, will increase to 68 in 2030 and 69 in 2035, applying to those born after December 31, 1970. Since 2006, Denmark has linked retirement age to life expectancy, adjusting it every five years. The law passed with 81 votes for and 21 against. However, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has questioned the automatic increase, suggesting future renegotiation. Critics, including trade unions and workers like 47-year-old roofer Tommas Jensen, argue the change is unfair, especially for those in physically demanding jobs, as it limits time for family and a dignified retirement. Protests occurred in Copenhagen, with trade union leader Jesper Ettrup Rasmussen calling the policy unfair despite Denmark’s strong economy. In comparison, Sweden’s pension age starts at 63, and Italy’s is 67, potentially rising in 2026 based on life expectancy.
