The Walt Disney Company is preparing to lay off around 1,000 employees in the coming weeks, primarily targeting its marketing division as part of a cost‑reduction initiative. The move, reported on April 8, 2026, represents less than 1% of Disney’s total workforce of about 231,000 and forms part of “Project Imagine,” led by Chief Marketing Officer Asad Ayaz to unify the company’s marketing operations.
These layoffs were planned before Josh D’Amaro officially assumed the role of CEO in March 2026. They follow several rounds of workforce reductions over the past two years, including cuts at ABC News, Disney Entertainment Networks, and corporate divisions such as finance and legal.
The Wall Street Journal noted that Disney continues to pursue cost‑saving measures following its massive 7,000‑person layoff program in 2023, as the company refocuses on streaming and operational efficiency amid a challenging global media landscape.
Brief (20 words): Disney to lay off 1,000 staff under Project Imagine, continuing cost‑cutting efforts amid restructuring and streaming‑focused business realignment.
