Iran Threatens to Exit Truce After Israel Bombing of Lebanon
The fragile ceasefire in the Middle East is on the brink of collapse after Iran warned it would withdraw from the U.S.-brokered truce, accusing Israel of violating the agreement through continued strikes in Lebanon, the Economist reports.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the terms of the deal were “clear and explicit,” insisting that Washington must choose between “a ceasefire and continued war via Israel.”
In response, Iran halted shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions in the region.
The White House confirmed that Vice-President J.D. Vance will lead talks with Iranian officials in Pakistan on Friday, describing the situation as a “legitimate misunderstanding” over whether Lebanon was included in the truce.
Lebanese authorities reported that Israeli airstrikes had killed more than 250 people, prompting Hizbullah to retaliate with rocket attacks.
Analysts warn that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz could severely disrupt global oil supply routes, worsening the ongoing energy crisis. The Washington Post noted that any escalation could trigger broader economic instability if Iran targets regional energy infrastructure.
With both sides trading accusations of violations, hopes for a lasting peace appear increasingly uncertain as diplomatic efforts struggle to contain the fallout.
