Locals may be allowed to use EPF Account 2 for health insurance payments

PETALING JAYA, June 20, 2025 – Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad has proposed allowing Malaysians to use EPF Account 2 funds for health insurance premiums, potentially benefiting 16 million members with access to private healthcare. Citing a 32% out-of-pocket healthcare cost burden, he noted the plan, modeled after Singapore, would be voluntary, using a small percentage of funds. Currently, Account 2 supports education, housing, and specific health costs. This comes amid Bank Negara Malaysia’s call for insurers to curb 40-70% premium hikes due to rising claims, which insurers deem unavoidable due to medical inflation.
