EPF Warns Lump Sum Withdrawals Threaten Retirement Security

The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) CEO Ahmad Zulqarnain Onn cautioned that lump sum retirement withdrawals jeopardize long-term financial security, with over 58% of working-age Malaysians lacking formal retirement savings. Speaking at the International Social Wellbeing Conference 2025, he emphasized rethinking savings strategies for a 100-year lifespan, stating, “If Malaysia is serious about preparing for a 100-year life, we must fundamentally rethink how we work, save, engage and care.”

The EPF is exploring structured monthly withdrawals and promoting retirement literacy to ensure sustainable savings, aligning withdrawal age with the national retirement age for a secure future.
