FRANKFURT, 19 August, 2026: Investor sentiment across the euro area strengthened more than expected in August, signalling growing confidence in the region’s economic outlook despite persistent risks surrounding energy prices and geopolitical tensions.
The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for the Euro Area rose to 31.4 in August, from 23.4 in July. The reading, the highest in six months, exceeded market expectations of around 25 to 26 points and marked the third consecutive monthly improvement.
The stronger sentiment was accompanied by a significant improvement in assessments of current economic conditions. The Eurozone Current Situation Index rose to -21.5 from -37.7 in July.
However, the negative reading indicates that economic conditions remain relatively weak, suggesting the region’s recovery is still at an early stage.
Investor morale
Germany, the eurozone’s largest economy, also recorded stronger investor expectations. Its ZEW expectations index climbed to 34.2 in August from 26.3 previously, supported by resilient exports, encouraging corporate earnings and increased infrastructure spending.
The latest figures point to improving expectations for economic activity over the next six months, with stronger external demand and rising business confidence potentially providing further support to the recovery.
Nevertheless, significant risks remain. Elevated energy costs could continue to weigh on businesses and households, while geopolitical disruptions could undermine trade and economic activity.
The combination of improving expectations and better current-condition assessments suggests that eurozone economic momentum could gradually strengthen in the coming months.
However, the still-negative current situation reading highlights the gap between rising optimism about the future and the relatively fragile state of the economy today.
Investors will therefore be watching closely for evidence that improving sentiment translates into stronger investment, production and consumer activity across the region.
