KUALA LUMPUR: A former Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) manager accused of attempting to leak confidential company information had applied for a job with Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) about five months before the alleged offence, the High Court heard on Tuesday.
Petros human resource analyst Nurul Qurratu Aini Laila Junaidi, the prosecution’s third witness, testified that Mohd Khairul Akmal Jasni applied for the position of Head, Upstream Finance on Jan 24, 2024.
She said Petros later offered him the post of Head, Finance (Gas Aggregator & SRM) on March 27, 2024, with a monthly salary of RM25,000. However, Mohd Khairul sought RM37,000, citing his industry experience.

Nurul Qurratu told the court Petros maintained its original offer as it was unable to meet his salary expectations. She added that the accused never responded to the offer email and no further offer was made.
The witness also said there was nothing unusual about his recruitment process, which followed the company’s standard procedures, including an online application and panel interview.
Mohd Khairul, then PETRONAS Business Performance Unit manager, is accused of attempting to disclose a confidential document to Petros on June 8, 2024. He was dismissed by PETRONAS on Dec 20, 2024. If convicted, he faces up to one year’s imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1 million, or both.
