FBM KLCI Holds Firm as Improving Global Sentiment Lifts Market Outlook

Malaysia’s benchmark index ended marginally higher as improving global sentiment, easing geopolitical tensions, and expectations surrounding key U.S. economic data supported optimism despite cautious investor sentiment.

FBM KLCI Eyes Breakout

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) edged 0.05 percent higher to close at 1,725.73 on Monday, as late buying in selected heavyweight stocks helped offset broader profit-taking across the market. Although the benchmark index finished in positive territory, overall market breadth remained negative, with 609 decliners outnumbering 490 gainers, reflecting continued investor caution.

Among the sectors, Financial Services led gains with a 0.54 percent increase, followed by Plantation, which rose 0.18 percent. Meanwhile, Industrial Products and Services and Energy lagged, declining 0.76 percent and 0.24 percent respectively.

Market sentiment is expected to remain constructive today, supported by a strong rally on Wall Street and improving global risk appetite. A sharp decline of more than five percent in crude oil prices, following easing tensions between the United States and Iran, has also strengthened investor confidence and may provide support for transport-related and energy-linked counters.

Investors are now shifting their attention to upcoming U.S. economic indicators, particularly the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes due on Wednesday and the U.S. non-farm payrolls report on Friday. These releases are expected to provide fresh clues on the direction of monetary policy and the broader economic outlook.
