Gamuda Bhd, through its 60%-owned SRS Consortium, has been awarded the first civil works package of the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, valued at over RM8 billion. The project, led by MRT Corp, aims to ease Penang Island’s traffic congestion and is scheduled for completion within six years. Federal funding estimates the total project cost at RM10-13 billion. Subsequent packages, including systems and remaining civil works, will be tendered separately.

Bumiputera contractors will handle 40% of subcontracts, with priority for Penang-based companies to boost local employment and supply chains. Gamuda stated its commitment to delivering the project on time and within budget, supporting Penang’s transportation master plan.
