Google Invests Heavily in Water Infrastructure and Youth Development

Google funds shared water infrastructure and clean energy training in Negeri Sembilan, supporting communities, sustainability, and future operations.

Google has announced a major investment in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, committing US$160 million to develop shared water infrastructure that will benefit both local communities and the company’s future data centre operations. The initiative marks a significant step in combining digital development with environmental sustainability and community support.

Working closely with the Negeri Sembilan State Government and Syarikat Air Negeri Sembilan Sdn Bhd (SAINS), Google has appointed Gamuda Berhad to construct an off-river storage reservoir and a new water treatment plant. Once completed, the facilities will be owned by Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan Incorporated (MBINS), the statutory body responsible for managing state assets.

The new treatment plant is expected to provide up to 65 million litres of potable water each day. While a portion of this supply will support Google’s upcoming data centre campus at Springhill Industrial Park in Port Dickson, the project is also designed to enhance water availability for residents, businesses, and public services across the state.

Water Infrastructure

A key feature of the project is the off-river storage reservoir located along the Linggi River. The reservoir will collect excess river water and rainfall during periods of high water flow. This approach not only helps secure water reserves for future use but also contributes to reducing flood risks in nearby flood-prone communities. During drier periods, stored water can be used to ensure a reliable supply without placing additional pressure on the river ecosystem.

Google stated that its investment reflects a broader commitment to sustainable growth. The company aims to replenish more freshwater than it consumes globally and is incorporating that goal into its infrastructure developments. Beyond water management, Google will also fund the power infrastructure needed to connect its future data centre campus to the national grid and will pay for all electricity consumed by the facility while meeting local regulatory requirements.
