One of the most popular “problems” that is currently facing the fashion community is for someone to score either a Birkin or a Kelly bag from Hermes. Recently, a number of TikTokers complained that their spending habits were not enough to warrant such an “exclusive” handbag from the brand.
An American TikToker states that she has spent over US$25,000 (RM117,000) at the luxury brand buying an assortment of bags, slippers, shoes and other accessories. However, she is still not offered a quota bag from the brand. Others suggest that she needs to spend on their household items in order to be able to purchase these bags.
Furthermore, another TikToker, this time a man, states that he is appalled by the service of the luxury brand. He claims that a sales associate gave him mediocre treatment and asked him to purchase an extra item if he was really keen on their coveted bags.
He adds that the same sales associate told him that he may need to purchase shoes and housewares if he wants a Birkin.
By restricting the amount of customers purchasing these coveted items, they are able to sell them items that are generally not sought after by most people. Furthermore, these items can be significantly more expensive than their bags. For example, a sofa from Hermes would set you back around US$89,000 (RM419,000).
Business Insider states that their stocks have risen by 30% within the last few years. Meanwhile, other luxury brands like Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton are seeing a steep decline in their sales.
But, a lawsuit directed towards the brand in lieu of their “abuse” towards customers who are interested in the Birkin. Two California shoppers decided to drag Hermes into a class action lawsuit simply because they were not offered these bags.
Regardless, it appears that the brand is still going on strong with their influence in the fashion industry.
