Apple has introduced its ultra powerful Apple Silicon chips, starting from the M1 in 2020. However, after five years, it seems that the previous Intel-based models are losing their resale value significantly.
This could be due to the fact that the newer Macbooks are significantly faster than the Intel based versions. Furthermore, the price of an actual new Macbook Air is relatively the same price as it was a decade ago. You can get an M2 Macbook Air from Machines for around RM3,300.
Currently, the price range of a Macbook Pro on Carousell is from RM300 to RM2,000, depending on the specs and year of make. Generally, the 2013-2016 Macbook Pros are ranging around the below RM1,000 price range. They’re still relatively powerful machines despite being 10+ years old.
For a student on a budget that would need a Mac for their usage, a second hand alternative could be a cost saving option.
However, for the Macbook Pros from 2013-2016, do note that they may have display delamination problems that were plagued by Apple’s retina macs a decade ago.
The 2012 Macbook Pros without retina display are even cheaper at around RM400. The flaw with that device is that it’s heavier, and are somewhat dated, but they’re still generally better than a new cheap netbook.
