Malaysia to Launch KL-Bangkok Rail Cargo Link in 2025 to Boost Trade

Malaysia plans to launch a direct rail cargo service between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok in 2025 to enhance bilateral and regional trade, as announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Approved by the cabinet, the service aims to improve connectivity to Laos, China, and Central Asia. Loke also revealed plans to revive direct passenger rail services to boost tourism, utilizing existing tracks. This follows Malaysia’s consideration of extending a $10 billion China-led rail project to the Thai border. Amid US tariffs of 24% on Malaysia and 36% on Thailand, the rail link strengthens trade ties with China, their largest trading partner.
