Malaysia Will Never Give Certificates of Origin To Foreign Rubber Gloves - Photo by ELEVATE on Pexels.com
Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani announced that rubber glove exporters must fully manufacture products in Malaysia to obtain a certificate of origin from the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, ensuring compliance with international trade agreements, particularly with the US. Speaking at the Malaysian Palm Oil Board’s Silver Jubilee Gala Night, Johari emphasized that re-exporting foreign-made gloves after repackaging is prohibited to protect local industry integrity. Malaysia produces 348,000 metric tonnes of rubber annually, far below the industry’s one million tonne demand, allowing imports of raw materials like Thai latex for domestic processing. The ministry recently restricted exports to licensed Malaysian Rubber Board manufacturers to maintain product quality and prevent Malaysia from becoming a trade diversion hub for foreign finished goods.
