Malaysia is exploring nuclear energy as a potential future power source, according to Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli. The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (Mosti) are tasked with developing the necessary legal and regulatory framework.
The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will officially consider nuclear energy as an option, following a decision endorsed by the National Energy Council and Cabinet. Rafizi emphasized the need for strict regulations and international compliance before moving forward.
In Southeast Asia, Vietnam has nuclear power plans under consideration, but no Southeast Asian country currently has active nuclear energy production.
