Miti appoints its deputy sec-gen as chief negotiator for US tariff talks
Starting August 8, over 11,000 US products will enjoy zero or reduced tariffs in Malaysia, said MITI Minister Zafrul Aziz. About 61%—including dairy, poultry, fruits, and sanitary goods—will see zero tariffs, while the rest face lower rates, covering 98.4% of US tariff lines. Malaysia’s semiconductor and pharmaceutical exports to the US remain tariff-free. MITI denied compromising Jakim’s halal standards for US beef, stressing import processes were streamlined without lowering criteria. Malaysia also confirmed it will halt raw rare earth exports to boost local industries. Requests to drop duties on US cars, tobacco, and alcohol were firmly rejected.
