Tengku Zafrul of MITI
Malaysia is actively addressing the U.S. trade deficit through high-level talks led by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz with U.S. officials, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The discussions focus on four key areas: reducing the trade deficit, addressing non-tariff barriers, strengthening technological safeguards and security, and exploring a potential bilateral trade agreement.
Malaysia welcomes a 90-day pause on proposed U.S. tariffs, viewing it as a chance for constructive dialogue. The country emphasizes maintaining open communication, avoiding retaliatory actions, and collaborating on mutually beneficial solutions. Malaysia highlights the improving trade balance, noting a downward trend in the U.S. trade deficit over the past decade, and underscores the strong economic ties with the U.S., driven by significant contributions from American companies. Additionally, as the 2025 Asean chair, Malaysia aims to expand U.S.-Asean cooperation to support regional stability and shared goals.
