KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian and Singaporean business entities have been identified among the top 20 corporate groups linked to widespread forest and peatland fires in Indonesia, according to a report by Greenpeace and Pantau Gambut.
Between August and October 2026, satellite data identified thousands of smoke-source points across oil palm and forestry concessions. Among those implicated is Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur Kepong (KLK) Group via its Indonesian affiliate PT Menteng Jaya Sawit Perdana. Concessions connected to Singapore-based firms were also cited, including Bumitama Agri Ltd (PT Damai Agro Sejahtera) and First Resources Ltd (PT Kayung Agro Lestari, PT Mitra, and PT Arjuna Utama Sawit).

Environmental watchdogs highlighted that systemic peatland degradation for commercial expansion drives the ongoing transboundary haze crisis. The toxic pollution has triggered severe health impacts, including a 259% surge in asthma cases in Malaysia and hundreds of thousands of respiratory illness cases in Indonesia. With cross-border smoke disrupting air quality across Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines, civil society groups are urging governments to enact strict legislative frameworks to hold regional corporations accountable for environmental destruction.
