Malaysian Students Achieve Global Recognition at AI Impact Festival

Malaysian students emerged as global prize winners at the fourth annual Intel AI Global Impact Festival, reflecting the country’s increasing role in artificial intelligence innovation. The festival’s theme, “Bringing AI Everywhere for Everyone,” highlighted the importance of creating inclusive, equitable, and accessible AI solutions. Participants from 25 countries showcased their projects, which were evaluated based on social impact, alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals, responsible AI development, and innovative use of Intel technologies.

Notable Malaysian Projects

Among the innovative projects from Malaysian students, several stood out:

  1. AI Storage Sentinel (Chong Yao Ong, Zi Xuan Mok):
    • An AI-powered cabinet that utilizes cameras and machine learning algorithms to track and locate items. This project particularly benefits dementia patients by helping them manage their belongings, and it has potential applications in reducing food waste and inventory loss for households and businesses.
  2. PALS (Pediatric Allergy Life Saver) (Iris Yan Ning):
    • This project aids parents and caregivers in managing children’s allergies through an AI-driven semantic search of allergy symptoms and an AI allergen detector. It features a digital allergy information card and a classroom tool to assist childcare centers in managing allergy information and generating safe meal options.

Global Prize Winners in Various Categories

In addition to the Malaysian projects, other notable winners included:

  • AUDEMY (USA): A platform offering audio-based games for blind students, utilizing text-to-speech and speech recognition technologies to transform education for the visually impaired.
  • CMA (Comprehensive Medical Assist) (Poland): An AI solution designed to assist doctors in diagnosing and managing patients, aiming to improve global health outcomes.

AI for Accessibility Award Winners

The following projects received special recognition for their commitment to enhancing accessibility:

  • DysTherapy (Turkey): A mobile application that provides personalized education for children with dyslexia using advanced AI methodologies.
  • Ishaara (India): An AI platform that translates text, speech, and Indian Sign Language (ISL) into various languages, promoting inclusion and preserving cultural heritage.

Intel’s Commitment to Positive Change

The festival emphasized Intel’s dedication to using technology as a force for good. Dawn Jones, Vice President of Corporate Social Impact at Intel, expressed admiration for the young innovators, stating that their work could drive global positive change through AI.

Intel’s Initiatives in Malaysia

In Malaysia, Intel actively promotes programs aimed at empowering students, professionals, and citizens in the digital economy. Notably, the AI untuk Rakyat (“AI for Citizens”) initiative, launched in January 2024 by the Prime Minister, has reached over one million participants. Additionally, over 500 students have benefited from the AI For Youth program since its inception in collaboration with CREST in 2021. Intel also partnered with the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation for the ‘Building Digital Readiness’ program in 2022 and 2023.

Through these efforts, Intel is fostering AI awareness and contributing to the development of future innovators in Malaysia.
