Meiden Singapore demonstration
Meiden Singapore Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of Meidensha Corporation, is collaborating with PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, to implement a large-scale demonstration plant using Ceramic Flat-Sheet Membranes for the pre-treatment of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO). This project follows successful pilot tests conducted between March 2021 and December 2023.
The demonstration plant will be co-funded by Meiden, the National Research Foundation, and PUB under the Living Lab (Water) Programme. Located at PUB’s Tuas Desalination Plant, the plant will retrofit the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) System and will treat up to 7 million gallons (nearly 32,000 cubic meters) of feed water per day. The plant is expected to be operational by April 2025.
The use of ceramic flat-sheet membranes instead of conventional DAF and polymeric ultrafiltration membranes is anticipated to enhance energy efficiency, particularly in conditions involving algae blooms or oil and grease spills. These membranes are noted for their longer lifespan, higher permeability, and robustness, which can lead to lower installation costs and better economic performance.
