The perception towards luxury brand, Michael Kors is that it’s an oversaturated brand. They are known for their outlet pieces rather than their higher end collections, and have been drenched in the logo mania craze. But, many find their brand to be one that is trying to democratize fashion, which has always been an elitist separation according to netizens.
A YouTube video done by The Fashion Fable states that the founder of the brand, Karl Anderson Jr, Michael Kors, had envisioned a luxury brand for the masses. The intentions were good, as fashion should be for everyone.
A YouTuber commented, “Let me make sure I understand. When us ordinary folk have access to luxury products it’s worth a documentary weeping over the demise of a brand.” This is the sentiment shared in the comments section of the video. Netizens feel that the elites do not find it appealing when a brand is trying to democratize themselves.
Another user states, “Well we need designers that cater to women who love well made clothes for work and evening. Let rich women access the big fashion houses and pay thousands for an outfit. As for me, I’m thankful for artful design and affordable luxury.”
This sentiment is also popular among the commenters as hard working people buying accessible well made items are scorned by some. In contrast, most Michael Kors customers appear to be satisfied with the quality of their products, unlike some “luxury” fashion brands that will set you back US$10,000 for a possibly defective handbag.
Regardless, mid-tier brands may be scorned by some, but they’re definitely going strong due to their positioning in the industry. Their positioning is to cater well made designer items, but at an affordable price point.
