High Court: Najib's House Arrest Order Invalid as Agong Must Follow Constitutional Procedures
In the ongoing 1MDB-Tanore trial, High Court Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah convicted Datuk Seri Najib Razak on the second charge of abusing his position under Section 23 of the MACC Act. The judge found Najib played a pivotal role in approving the acquisitions of Mastika Lagenda and Tanjong Energy Holdings, which could not proceed without his consent as Finance Minister and 1MDB advisory board chairman.
Sequerah noted Jho Low’s involvement in negotiations, including with Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, and highlighted the non-transparent process that bypassed Ministry of Finance officials. Najib approved transactions pre-board, issuing a US$1.75 billion bond. Defence disputes over signatures were deemed afterthoughts based on probabilities, failing to rebut the charges.
This follows conviction on the first abuse of power count, with verdict delivery continuing.
